WANTED! ARTISTS/CRAFTERS FOR AN AMAZING EVENT ON 12TH FEBRUARY

"For the love of Art" Growing Artists Valentines Artists Showcase.... All money raised goes towards free participatory arts workshops for vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the local community.

The event aims to showcase local creative talent, and will include live acoustic music, performance and stalls from local artists and makers. Come along enjoy some food, and drinks and be entertained and maybe pick up a beautiful piece... of work made by a local artist for your loved one! There will be kids activities and face painting. The Brunswick have a wonderful menu and drinks bar as well. A family friendly event that cannot be missed.

We are looking for stall holders, artists and makers, musicians, performance artists to perform or sell their work at this event, and the many more to follow in 2011 and beyond! We are also looking for Arts (visual, performance and new media) teachers and facilitators who have experience of working in community settings.

Arts/crafts stalls are £18 per half pasting table size (approx 1m x 55cm)

WANTED! Artists and Crafters for a White Night Festival Night Time Bizaar!

On the 30th Oct the CompARTment Group presents The Open Sesame Night-time Bazaar at the London Road Open Market, Brighton.

From 6pm till 2am the market will be transformed into an illuminated evening of pop-up cinema, performance, music, art, craft stalls and beyond …..

CompARTment is a Brighton based collective who’s aims are to transform empty buildings and sites into creative hubs for learning, collaborating, exhibiting, workshops and community involvement.

This event will come at the end of an initial 3 month phase of compARTment’s pilot project at the Open Market and will provide inspiration and a way mark to artists and their work and to the project itself.

I am looking for artists and crafts people to get involved with the market. Stall spaces of approx. 6ft x 4ft are available for ONLY £5 each! Tables will need to be provided by the artist. The running time for the market is from 6pm to 2am.

If you are interested in getting involved please email me (Josephine) at sisilylove@hotmail.com with your details and a brief description of what you will be selling as soon as possible. I will then send you further instructions of what you will need to do next.

Unfortunately NO alcohol can be sold on the night, and anyone planning on selling food MUST have Health & Safety certificates and Liability insurance.

The compARTment group meet every Tuesday in the Prince Albert pub (in the Green room) at 7.30 - please come along if you would like to take part and meet the group.

Cheeky Monkey!

I was treasure hunting at a flea market in Bournemouth a few years ago and I found an amazing Vintage Monkey ornament which I simply had to take home. I fell in love with his super cute face and cheeky smile so much that I had to try and reproduce it in some of my work...

So I decided to make a mould and re-create his cheeky little face in plastic resin!

Each Monkey face has been hand casted by myself using a resin plastic. The delicate system that I use to create my moulds mean that it is only possible to cast an extremely small number of pieces before the mould saturates. Therefore the number is Monkey face brooches that I have created is limited to an edition of 5.

So if you are wearing one of these little cuties it is highly unlikely you will see anyone wearing anything the same!

Each resin face has been securely attached to a corsage style brooch which has been made from reclaimed felt and netting.

The brooch is secured with a security pin on the back.

Yipee! My ever popular Lego jewellery is back!

But for this season I have tried to make them with a slightly different 'twist' - I has sourced some different colour chain and findings, and have started producing necklaces too...

All of the LEGO which I use is recycled – it was second hand, unwanted or unloved. I cannot always get specific colours as particular LEGO colour runs are harder to source than others; this is due to ‘LEGO’s’ original production levels. Some colours are particularly rare and therefore expensive to source, but I do my best to get my paws on whatever colours I can, and rarer/limited edition or discontinued colour groups are reflected in my pricing.

I always ensure that my LEGO products are sent out gift wrapped in a box made from 100% recycled materials - This particular gift box was made from a 'Diana' Annual from 1984, which has been customised with thread and logos.

I love Lychees, and I really wanted to recreate my passion for this fruit in my latest project making ‘corsage style’ flower brooches.

I began by hand casting a lychee in plastic resin. The delicate system that I use to create my moulds, mean that it is only possible to cast an extremely small number of pieces before the mould saturates. Therefore the number of resin lychees that I have created for this project is limited to an edition of 14.

I then sewed a corsage/flower style base to secure the lychee onto. Each flower has two layers, and on each layer there are 6 individually crafted petals. The petals are made from reclaimed fabrics and recycled vintage fabrics that have been stitched on to a felt or denim base.

In addition to the extremely limited number of these brooches that I have produced, each individual piece is made from very different fabrics and the lychees are made from different coloured resins, therefore each piece is 100% bespoke and individual.

The brooch is finished off with a pin on the back that has a security fastening.

Due to their bespoke nature, if you were to wear one of these little cuties it is highly unlikely you will see anyone else wearing the same piece!

Studio_805 - London Fashion Week - A/W Collection 2009

Once again, daring to stand out from the crowd my dear friend Andrew Bannister shows his amazing dual gender collection for Autumn/Winter 2009 at the London Fashion Week 'Vauxhal Fashion Scout' show this September.

With big, red, shiny plastic 'sex doll-esque' mouth pieces, the installation of stationary models bedazzled the viewers with the Bowery-style progressive cuts and off the cuff mix of colour and texture that the label is becoming famous for.

Andrew's second collection is “preoccupied with confusing classic gender roles set within a Hogarth inspired landscape” – it's a confident, bold and entertaining collection that’s sure to be a hit with stylists.

And as gift for Andrew (and a belated Birthday pressie) we made a 'Tranny cake' - that yes, did taste as good as it looked...

So this Autumn I'm knitting myself thin....8lbs and 3 balls later, what else could I have knitted but a sock for the tree outside my house...complete with co-ordinating pompoms - guerrilla crafting in Hove couldn't have got much better...!

My VERY Neglected Blog... Shame on Me!

So what have I been up to for all these months? Well working lots and lots at the gym....but finally my hours are back to part time, so more time for crafty crafty-ness...yippee!

MAY - I went on a fantastic holiday to Greece, the weather was excellent, the food was amazing, and the magical Mythos beer was, well, magical!

But with any holiday, there is always a hint of the annoying and a splash damn right weird. So thank you Sonia for taking us to the most freakish, random and actually pretty rubbish 'Museum of Natural History' (taxidermy museum) in Zakithos. You will see from my pictures that most of the poor poor exhibits were little more than road kill will plastic toy eyes such on. Ummmmmm....

JULY - I went to THE MOST AMAZING festival....(and I have been to a fair few...) The Secret Garden Party in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. This one definitely wins my vote, and it will be the only one I'll ever be going to again.
Secret garden craziness included ball pits, art installations, a dance stage on a lake that you had to row to, secret rooms in hidden fireplaces, stall where you could make a cake or decorate a pair of pants, wellington boot throwing contests and sock wrestling.... 24/7 silliness...
The festival itself is in a wonderful setting, which is enhanced by every part of the space being decorated with various curios and as the sun went down the lighting was simply amazing.
Every one made such a HUGE effort with their outfits and costumes...I was in my fancy dress heaven!

There was a stall where you could have your photograph taken professionally, and they had lots and lots of 'quintessentially British' props that you could strike a pose with....and lucky me, I got the big red phone...

This is one of the many amazing sculptures that were scattered about around the festival...

....and there were doors that did not lead anywhere....

There were lots of fantastic costumes....

But by Sunday things got rather silly...

But I did not miss the opportunity to do a little guerrilla crafting whilst I was there...

I even found someone wearing one of my little treasures....!

AUGUST - I finally organized my first craft night! (It only took about 6 months to sort out...tut tut...) On our first craft night we made and decorated cup cakes...

We did get a rather too experimental with the colours and flavours, and what we eventually ended up with was a wonderful mixture of cup cakes, ranging from coconut flavoured chocolate cakes topped with lemon butter cream and blue glitter, to pink Turkish delight flavoured cakes with blue smartie covered icing.... oh dear!

We tried to sell these little treats at the Brunswick festival in Brighton, but alas we could not even give them away...huh!

SEPTEMBER - Took me to the Isle of Wight, and WOW was a fantastic trip! I spent some lovely time with my mum and gosh, who would have thought that there would be so much to do in such a little place!
Some places on the Island where like stepping back in time, we found old arcade machines to play on and had soooooo much fun on the 2p gamblers...!

We found an amazing toy museum...

And we took a trip on a cable cart at The Needles...

And we saw a beautiful white tiger at the Isle of Wight Zoo...

So that was my Summer. Autumn is pretty much here, so whats next? Who can say....!

Melissa shoes have got to be the the most wonderful thing I have ever put on my trotters...yummy, smelling of candy...perfectly punky.....plastic, ummmm my favorite -"nice and shiny and completely waterproof"!!!

This collaboration with Westwood is set to be the latest best-seller from the Brazil-based shoe company that has revolutionised plastic shoes and which, in its own words, doesn't actually create shoes but instead designs 'fashion accessories'.

Back in 1979, Brazilian shoe giant Grendene developed the PVC sandal known as 'jelly shoes'. Since then, the company has developed an ecologically-aware production process in which every product is recyclable and challenged the world's perception of plastic by fusing its thermoplastic technology with the talents some of the most innovative designers on the planet.

For Westwood the partnership has been particularly exciting because it's enabled her to "create modern products of a very high quality, but at affordable prices".

365 Day Self-Portrait....

At the beginning of February I decided to take part in the FLICKR group '365 Days' -

Each day, take a self-portrait and submit it in to the FLICKR group pool.

With 13,320 members, you can only imagine how many pics are submitted everyday! It is quite fascinating to see other members entries, from professional photographers to average Joe's snaps on their camera phones - each and every one giving a thought or idea of their day.

I love this project, as a visual person, I have always find it hard to keep a daily written diary, but this project has helped me keep a record of what is going on in my life from day to day, I know just by looking at the expression on my face what kind of day I have had, where I am and what I have been doing.

Princess Diana...The People's Punk....

Wiping the tears from my eyes, I spent most of Wednesday at my mum's house sorting through my old clothes (...very old clothes!)....one for the charity shop, one for the bin, one to keep...no... four to keep, or lets make that six...and so on and so forth until I actually ended up keeping most of what was actually destined for the bin. So why tears?...gosh, the tears...tears of happy memories, tears of sad memories, tears of disappeared years and tears of will I EVER fit in to that again???

But the point where I actually wee-d myself a little bit was when I found the legendary Diana T-shirt...I bloody loved that T-shirt. People still find it hard to believe that only a few days before the unfortunate death of Princess Diana, I found a child's T-shirt featuring the face of Diana for just 20p in some charity shop in Bournemouth.

I remember the day she died as if it was yesterday...having still been up from the night before, I was staying at my friend Ish's place, having to shake myself as I watched the morning news telling the world the sad story of her death. I also remember jumping about like a kangaroo on speed, banging on Ish's bedroom door trying to get her to wake up and witness history, only to be told to F*** OFF.

Within less than 24 hours, the T had been slashed, pinned back together, Diana's hair painted pink and finished off with a safety pin through her nose and eyebrow. Upcycling at its best. The people's princess had become the people's punk, and what a more fitting tribute?

The next day I wore it out to a dodgy jazz club in town. It caused havoc. Where the hell did I get my balls from?

It is only since I have grown older that I have actually realised how fitting the statement of the 'people's punk' was. I bloody Loved that T-shirt.

One of my favourite images of Diana is when she has rocking her see-through skirt...you can't get much more punk than that eh?

3 wardrobes of clothes and STILL nothing to wear...

For the past few days I have literary been pulling my hair out trying to think of something to wear to London Fashion Weeks' Vauxhall Fashion Scout show....arrragggghhhhh!!!

In times like this I always look towards my true style icon of all time, Debbie Harry.

I decided to go through my old vinyl records and found one of my favorite Blondie albums - Parallel Lines. I LOVE this album and I LOVE the album cover......and then the inspiration came! And with the help of my Sizzix Die cutter (the BEST tool) and my trusty glue gun, I have made my self a gorgeous 100% bespoke hair fascinator....

I am going to pair this up with a tiger print Ra-Ra skirt, a slash neck white T and a red vest, my all time fave blondie-tastic black stilettos and some matching black and white Lego jewellery.

MUMS - The greatest thing in the world!

My Mum - fantastic, beautiful, STRONG, funny, creative, brilliant and alllllll mine. So why am I having this sudden outburst of blog lurve for my mumma?

Well this past 2 years have probably been the toughest ones yet. But FINALLY I feel like I am turning the corner and things are starting to get back on track. There is no doubting that there have been some really awful and horrendous times, but the one constant throughout it all, keeping me sane, supporting me, listening to my woes and mopping up my tears...MY MUM.

My brilliant, fantastic, glorious Mum. And here she is looking as beautiful as ever...

The lead up to Christmas was exhausting, and I always find January a really tough month to get motivated. During the festive hols I stumbled across a book called the creative entrepreneur written by Sonora Beam, and what a fantastic find!
In the words on Sonora herself "The Creative Entrepreneur is a visual, results-oriented, step-by-step method of business development for creatives from all walks of life who want to turn their passions into viable business opportunities.
Whether you are an artist, designer, or small business owner, this book will empower you to invent or renew your vision with the steps required to take your creative idea and make it real."

During my hiatus years as a sales manager I found myself on many courses which took me through SWOT analysis, SMART targets, BUSINESS PLANNING and IMPLIMENTATION, but more often than not, the information floated into my brain but never actually became relevant to what I actually wanted to achieve. The simple technique of 'visual journaling' that the book teaches seems to make every component of a business plan realistic, achievable most importantly, relevant to a creative thinker. It is so refreshing to find a business development book that is written in my language! I love it, and would recommend it to anyone with a crafty mind and a passion for success!

It must be a sign.....!!!

Just lately I have been OBSESSED with vinyl, so much so that my other work has been put on the back burner....along with one of my best sellers; my twisted Lego jewellery...

Then....last week a GIANT Lego man washed up Brighton beach! It has got to be a sign!

My first reaction was I WANT IT, but then I realised that it probably would not be the most practical of house hold items as it measures a stunning 8ft tall! (but at least it wouldn't get lost down the back of the sofa...)

Brighton and Hove Council say that they are happy to leave it where it landed on the beach - How fab... my god I LOVE this town!

According to the local newspaper, the giant Lego man (I have named him George), swam over from Denmark (where there is a Lego Park), but others believe that he fell off a ship or is part of a publicity stunt. I believe however, that it was a sign, especially for me, to make more of my Lego jewellery.....!!!

What makes me even more sure of this is that in August last year, another giant Lego man washed up on the beach in the Dutch resort of Zandvoort. (YES - I AM GOING TO HOLLAND THIS THURSDAY!)

I wonder how many more giant Lego men are floating about in the sea, or is it just George doing a world tour?

Even though I have sold a few of these pieces in stores, this is my first one to sell online. So this weekend I am going on a mass production to get more of these babies ready to fill up my ETSY shop and for the WE MAKE CHRISTMAS event in December.....
